At Victoria's Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP), Zagi's prosecuted serious sex offences. Observing graphic images as evidence from both children and adults, two years in to the role, Zagi became so mentally unwell she could no longer work. What followed was a years-long legal battle culminating in a groundbreaking High Court decision. This is stark reminder and true story of trauma, PTSD and a lack of procedure and protocol to keep lawyers safe, mentally and physically, in the workplace.

This quick-fire presentation will provide you with great insight into Vicarious Trauma and Burnout in law.
Dr Angelo de Alwis is a psychiatrist working for the Gold Coast Mental Health Service. Migrating to Australia in 2017, obtaining a fellowship in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 2019, Angelo is passionate about the interface between law and psychiatry. Angelo has a special interest in the history of psychiatry and offers a fantastic insight into trauma informed practices.

The tragedy of domestic violence (DV) is in itself, a horror! Danielle Carroll, sister of DV murder victim, Kelly Wilkinson, will share the destruction, terror they felt and aftermath of the trauma carried by a devistated family. Kelly's untimely passing left an indelible mark on the lives of so many people and inspired the creation of the foundation, to take action in supporting other families who have been affected by domestic violence homicide and the trauma it causes.
This panel discussion will explore how to design trauma-informed legal services and how to lead trauma-informed teams from the National Legal Aid With You Project. Hear from a diverse panel that includes a trauma-informed leader of a community legal service, a lived experience advocate and a Churchill Fellow with international examples of trauma-informed legal services.

Saul Holt is Qlds Pre-eminant KC, he took silk in 2012. Saul was Chief Counsel at Victoria Legal Aid until 2013 and was a Victorian Law Reform Commissioner until 2014. He is a Board member of the Australian Advocacy Institute, a member of the Australian Bar Association Ethics Committee, a General Editor of Butler & Holt’s “Indictable Offences Queensland” and a contributing author of O’Callaghan’s “Federal and Victorian Regulators." Saul will intrigue us with his journey of traumatic cases.
